About this position
JAMSTEC invites applications for one specially appointed researcher, equivalent to a postdoctoral researcher, in the Cloud-Resolving Model Development and Application Group and Data Science Research Program in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.
The researcher will contribute to global cloud-resolving climate model development and application and AI Earth system modeling under projects on extreme meteorology and global water-cycle predictability. Research includes evaluating extreme phenomena and background fields against satellite and other observations, improving and accelerating physical schemes with GPU support, conducting large-scale numerical simulations, and developing datasets and AI weather-model emulators.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a related field. Relevant backgrounds include meteorology, oceanography, climate science, computer science, high-performance computing, and computational science. Experience with weather or climate model evaluation, physical-scheme implementation, GPU acceleration, high-resolution simulations, or supercomputer-based AI emulators is desirable.
The position is full-time and fixed-term from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2028, with possible annual renewal through March 31, 2030 subject to project progress, performance, and budget. Annual income is approximately 7–8 million yen, with insurance coverage, commuting and relocation support, and possible company housing. Applications are due by November 30, 2026, at 23:59 JST. Interviews are generally conducted online.
