About this position
Ghent University is recruiting for the ERC Starting Grant project LuMoCX, an interdisciplinary programme on the production of metals, oxygen, and construction materials from lunar regolith using solar energy. The project combines materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computational fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, and experimental work on molten oxides and slag systems.
There are openings for multiple PhD candidates and one postdoctoral researcher. Research topics may include CFD of high-temperature and pyrometallurgical processes, molecular dynamics simulations, experimental determination of thermophysical/structural/rheological properties, and multiscale modelling of heat transfer, fluid flow, mixing, and transport phenomena with experimental validation.
PhD applicants should hold, or soon obtain, a relevant master’s degree in engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field. Strong English is required; experience with programming, modelling, high-temperature experiments, or materials characterization is an advantage. Postdoctoral applicants should have a PhD in a related discipline and proven expertise in at least one core project area.
The PhD fellowship is full-time, initially for 12 months and extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The postdoctoral appointment is full-time for 12 months, renewable twice up to 36 months total, with possible longer duration in specific MSCA-related cases. Funding is described as salary-equivalent fellowship/grant support, with Ghent University staff benefits.
Applications must be submitted electronically by 2026-12-07 23:59. Required documents include the application form, diplomas, transcripts, and three referees’ names and email addresses. Send the application to [email protected] and mention “Lumocx Vacancy” in the subject line. For questions, contact Prof. Inge Bellemans at [email protected].
