PhD Assistant in Pharmacoepidemiology – Tailored Therapy for Lung Diseases Ghent University in Belgium

Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a PhD Assistant position in Pharmacoepidemiology within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Bio-analysis. This research-focused role centers on tailored therapy for lung diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is a major global health concern. The project aims to identify medications that improve lung health and prevent reduced lung function in older adults by collecting and analyzing data on medication use and lung function in the general population.

At least 70% of the assignment is dedicated to academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. The successful candidate will contribute to data collection and analysis, focusing on existing therapies and their impact on lung health. The research is highly relevant to public health, clinical pharmacology, and precision medicine, and involves advanced biostatistical methods using R and/or SPSS.

In addition to research, the candidate will assist in teaching activities, specifically Dutch courses such as Pathophysiology I-IV and Design of Clinical Studies, and participate in departmental services. The position offers a multidisciplinary and international academic environment, with opportunities for professional development and collaboration.

Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree (Medicine, Hospital Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Care, Drug Development, or equivalent) by the start of the appointment. For degrees awarded outside the EU, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Recommended qualifications include publications or a thesis on lung diseases, precision medicine, or chronic complex diseases, as well as teaching experience or participation in extra training and conferences. Strong teaching and communication skills, proficiency in statistical data processing, and clinical and analytical abilities are essential. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of current healthcare evolutions, the ability to translate research into practice and training, and possess an independent, problem-solving, organized, and result-oriented attitude, along with social skills, flexibility, and critical spirit.

The appointment is for two years, renewable twice for two years (maximum six years), subject to positive evaluation. Remuneration follows salary scale AAP3, and staff benefits include training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The position starts on 1 July 2026 at the earliest.
