About this position
Ph.D. Assistantship in Freshwater Invasion Ecology at Illinois State University (School of Biological Sciences).
The Andres Lab is seeking a Ph.D. student for a funded project on the invasion ecology of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. The research will examine the species’ current distribution and ecological impacts as it expands through the Illinois and Mississippi River systems.
This project uses a mix of environmental DNA (eDNA), diet metabarcoding, and genomics, and offers opportunities to collaborate with state and federal scientists on work with direct management relevance. Students interested in aquatic ecology, fisheries, wildlife biology, molecular ecology, and conservation applications are especially encouraged to apply.
Funding: monthly stipend of approximately $2,300 for up to 5 years, plus a full tuition waiver and health insurance. Support will come through a combination of RA and TA appointments, with additional funding available for research expenses and conference travel.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have an M.S. degree or equivalent research experience in biology, ecology, fisheries, wildlife biology, or a related field; strong communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and evidence of research productivity. Competitive applicants will have aquatic fieldwork experience and molecular lab skills such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, library preparation, or next-generation sequencing.
Application: email Kara Andres with a CV, a one-page statement describing research experience, interests, career goals, and fit for the position, plus contact information for three professional references. Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled. Preferred start date is Spring or Summer 2027.
