About this position
PhD research at Radboudumc will focus on AI-driven handheld ultrasound for military trauma care. The project asks how artificial intelligence can make portable ultrasound more accessible and effective in challenging operational settings, where medical resources, specialist expertise, and evacuation options may be limited.
You will work on the development and evaluation of AI methods for medical imaging, with a particular emphasis on ultrasound-based rapid diagnostics. A key starting point is EFAST, the trauma ultrasound protocol used to detect internal bleeding, pneumothorax, and other potentially life-threatening injuries, but the project also leaves room to explore additional ultrasound applications in military healthcare.
The research is not limited to algorithm development. You will also study how AI-supported ultrasound tools can be integrated into real military medical practice, taking into account the needs and capabilities of healthcare providers and the constraints of operational environments. The overall aim is to strengthen point-of-care trauma diagnostics, with potential relevance beyond the military context as well.
You will be based in the Department of Medical Imaging at Radboudumc and work within the Medical Ultrasound Imaging Center (MUSIC). MUSIC develops, optimizes, and clinically evaluates new ultrasound imaging methods, with a strong focus on AI-driven handheld ultrasound and close collaboration with equipment vendors, radiologists, engineers, and medical doctors. The group combines expertise in image reconstruction, processing, deep learning, analysis, and patient-trial design.
The project is carried out in collaboration with the Civil-Military Centre of Expertise for Trauma Care (CETC), a partnership between the Netherlands Armed Forces and UMC Utrecht. Through this collaboration, you will also interact with researchers and clinical experts connected to the Ministry of Defense, linking academic imaging research with practical military healthcare needs.
Radboudumc describes itself as a leading academic medical center in Nijmegen with a strong research environment across care, education, and scientific innovation.
