About this position

The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering of ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to develop highly efficient and ultra-wide range converter systems for DC power supplies. The HPE lab is internationally recognized for its research on power electronic converter systems, which are essential for future energy distribution, renewable energy integration, electric vehicles, and advanced medical and accelerator applications. This new project focuses on the design and optimization of low-power DC supplies with very high efficiency and a wide input voltage range, targeting facility automation applications such as actuators and sensors. These systems often operate at low loads or in standby, but their global energy impact is significant, and improving their efficiency can substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The successful candidate will develop novel converter concepts for AC/DC power supplies that maintain high efficiency even at low output power. The research will involve creating advanced multi-physics models of all relevant components, integrating these models into optimization procedures for comprehensive system efficiency, and collaborating with other PhD candidates on modeling frameworks.

The candidate will also validate models and optimization results through test setups and prototype systems, working closely with an industry partner. There is an opportunity to explore integration of these converter concepts into power integrated circuits, potentially adding features and reducing costs. Applicants must hold a diploma or M.Sc. in electrical engineering with excellent grades, possess fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems, have good communication skills, fluency in English, and a willingness to work in an international team. Interest in detailed modeling and design of magnetic components and system optimization is important.

ETH Zürich offers a dynamic, international research environment, competitive salary, excellent benefits, and encourages participation in international conferences. The university is committed to diversity, sustainability, and providing a supportive environment for professional and personal growth. Applications must be submitted online and include a CV, transcripts, thesis/publications, and references.
