About this position

PhD project in AI for ship design and marine engineering

The Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a PhD position focused on artificial intelligence for accelerated concept evaluation and tender-phase ship design. The research will develop methods that make early-stage marine design faster, more efficient and better informed.

The project will investigate AI-based generation and exploration of marine design concepts, rapid performance estimation, automated data transformation, knowledge graphs and AI-assisted design-space exploration. The work will span marine vessels including ships and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), with a case study connected to Fjordlab in the Norwegian Ocean Technology Center.

The successful candidate will explore how engineering data can be structured for AI design tools, how designers and engineers use computational tools, and how full-scale operational data can support new concept development. The research combines computational methods with applied marine engineering and close cooperation with industrial partners.

The PhD is part of the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, a collaborative research environment involving NTNU and partners including the University of Oslo, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy, the Norwegian Mapping Authority, MET and SINTEF Nordvest. The centre addresses maritime AI applications across ship design and construction, logistics, voyage optimization, condition monitoring, autonomous ships, remote control, decarbonization and energy management.

Based in Ålesund, the candidate will join NTNU's Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering, an international environment working on ship and marine equipment design, vessel operations, maritime technology and the interaction of technology, human factors and business. The role includes collaboration with researchers and maritime industry partners, as well as opportunities for laboratory, field and sea-testing activities.

Funding details

The position is a full-time, temporary three-year PhD appointment. What's required

Applicants must meet the admission requirements for NTNU's Faculty of Engineering Doctoral Programme and hold a relevant master's degree in mechanical engineering, product design, marine engineering, naval architecture or a closely related field, with a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Degrees in computer science or mechatronics are also welcome. The master's degree must be completed and documented before starting. Applicants should have a strong academic background and normally a master's average of B or better on the NTNU grading scale, or an equivalent academic foundation. Affinity with programming and AI-related tools, excellent spoken and written English, and the ability to work independently, systematically and collaboratively are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with machine learning or generative AI for engineering design, CAD and parametric modelling, simulation, sensors, data acquisition, field testing, marine vessels or USVs, and design methodology.

How to apply

Submit the application and all attachments electronically through Jobbnorge.no. Include bachelor's and master's transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or summary, a research project outline of up to 1,500 words, a motivation letter of up to 400 words, relevant publications or certificates, and contact details for three referees.
