[Funded studentship providing fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD Studentship at the University of Exeter focused on developing bioresorbable, regenerative scaffolds and additive manufacturing strategies for engineering the screw–bone interface. The project addresses a major clinical challenge in spinal surgery: screw loosening and pull-out, especially in patients with poor bone quality. Rather than relying only on conventional fixation devices, the research aims to create ...

About this position

This PhD project at Maastricht University focuses on how cell–matrix interactions can be controlled using dynamic supramolecular hydrogels. The work sits at the interface of biomaterials, mechanobiology, cell biology, and polymer chemistry, with the goal of understanding how cells sense and respond to hydrogel properties such as molecular organization, stiffness, stress relaxation, ligand presentation, and dynamic reinforcement.

You will join the BioMatt group within MERLN’s Department of Instructive Biomaterials Engineering. The group develops biomaterials that actively interact with biological systems, combining molecular and polymer design with cell biology and tissue engineering. The environment is described as highly collaborative and international, with access to newly renovated laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities, and scientific support from the broader SupraValent team.

The project is part of the ERC Consolidator project SupraValent and builds on established hydrogel platforms based on reversible self-assembly and post-assembly modification. Your research will explore how material features are perceived by cells and how cell activity feeds back on the material, including matrix deposition, remodeling, and changes in hydrogel structure or mechanics over time. The longer-term aim is to move toward living materials, in which engineered cells contribute to construction, reinforcement, or functional adaptation of the hydrogel.

The student will work with both well-defined cells and previously created materials at the outset, then progressively extend the platform toward new material designs in collaboration with the team. The position offers training in designing supramolecular hydrogels, establishing 2D and 3D cell-culture workflows, studying mechanotransduction and phenotype, and contributing to publications, presentations, and student supervision within a multidisciplinary biomaterials research setting.

The project is supervised by Dr. Matthew Baker.

Funding details

What's required

Applicants should have an MSc (or equivalent) in Biomaterials, Polymer Chemistry, Tissue Engineering, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a closely related field. Equivalent research qualifications may be considered individually where no separate Master’s degree exists. The ideal candidate should have substantial hands-on experience from an MSc thesis, extended research project, or relevant research position in either mammalian cell culture or biomaterials design, including aseptic technique, experimental planning, and maintenance of cell-based assays, or polymer functionalization, soft matter characterization, and hydrogel formation. Experience with cells in biomaterials, hydrogels, extracellular-matrix models, or engineered microenvironments is required, and 3D cell culture or cell encapsulation is highly desirable. Interest in mechanobiology and in relating cell behavior to stiffness, stress relaxation, ligand presentation, or remodeling is expected. Prior rheology or mechanical-characterization experience is helpful but not required. Excellent scientific English at minimum CEFR C1 is required. Availability to start on short notice is desirable, though the start date is flexible for highly qualified applicants.
