About this position
SupraValent is an ERC Consolidator project at Maastricht University that aims to create a programmable two-way interface between living cells and synthetic hydrogels. In this postdoctoral project, the successful candidate will help establish a new research line in engineered living materials by combining synthetic biology, microbial engineering, and dynamic supramolecular hydrogel platforms.
The work is centered on developing engineered microbial cells that can sense defined signals and then produce, secrete, display, or activate molecules that modify a surrounding hydrogel. The project uses existing dynamic hydrogel systems and reactive chemistries to explore how biological outputs can be coupled to changes in material structure, mechanics, and biological function over time.
You will join the BioMatt group in the Department of Instructive Biomaterials Engineering (IBE) at MERLN, Maastricht University. The group works at the interface of molecular and polymer design, cell biology, tissue engineering, and biomaterials, and is part of a broader international research environment spanning biomaterials, chemistry, mechanobiology, tissue engineering, biofabrication, microbiology, and cell biology.
This position is the lead engineered-cell and living-materials work package within SupraValent. The postdoctoral researcher will have freedom to refine the biological strategy while working within an established interdisciplinary team. The project seeks a proof of concept in which an engineered cellular output produces a measurable and programmable change in a supramolecular hydrogel, with the longer-term goal of creating adaptive materials whose biological and synthetic components cooperate to generate new functions.
The broader research environment at MERLN offers newly renovated laboratories, state-of-the-art facilities, and close scientific support from colleagues across the SupraValent team. The role also involves collaboration with synthetic chemists, polymer scientists, and bioengineers within MERLN and its network, along with opportunities to lead publications, conference contributions, and support the supervision of junior researchers.
