PhD Research Fellow in Structured Vision-Language Models at the University of Oslo , Norway, in the research centre Integreat – the Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning . This PhD project focuses on a major limitation of current vision-language models (VLMs): while they can identify objects in an image, they often fail to understand what is happening and how objects relate to each other. The project aims to address this by developing panoptic scene graphs , where objects and ba...

About this position

The Department of Computer Science at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting a PhD Candidate to work on explainable AI for capsule endoscopy within the EU-funded CAPTURE Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network. The position is based in Gjøvik, Norway, and is part of NTNU’s Colourlab research environment.

The project focuses on making automated pathology detection in wireless capsule endoscopy more interpretable and clinically useful. You will work on methods that turn recent AI-based diagnostic systems from black-box models into systems that can better explain their decisions to clinicians. The goal is to improve the explainability and actionability of predictions used in medical decision support.

Research in CAPTURE combines computer vision, artificial intelligence, and medical imaging with a strong interdisciplinary and international setting. The doctoral network brings together academic, healthcare, and industry partners across Europe, and includes workshops, conferences, transferable skills training, and research secondments. The project has a clinical focus on inflammatory bowel disease and related gastrointestinal diseases, while also developing methods with broader relevance for wireless endoscopy.

As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the development of explainable AI methods for automated diagnostic decision systems and evaluate the resulting explanations together with medical doctors. The work includes collaboration with hospitals, participation in the Colourlab research group, and involvement in the network’s joint research and training activities across partner institutions.

The position is supervised and contacted through Prof. Kiran Raja at NTNU.

Funding details

What's required

Relevant master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Applicants must have experience with computer vision and machine learning, excellent Python programming skills with exposure to PyTorch or TensorFlow, and excellent oral and written English. A strong academic background is required, normally an average grade of B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale, though exceptional candidates with a weaker background may be considered if they can document strong suitability through relevant work experience or peer-reviewed academic work. The applicant must not already hold a doctoral degree and must comply with the MSCA mobility rule, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Norway for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before recruitment. Master students may apply if the degree will be completed and documented before starting.

How to apply

Submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, CV, copy or draft of master’s thesis, a project outline, motivation letter, publications or other relevant research work, certificates if applicable, and contact details for at least two referees.
