About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a three-year PhD Candidate position in genetic epidemiology at the HUNT Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology in Trondheim, Norway. The project, HUNT-Genes IP, is funded by the Research Council of Norway and combines academic research with pharmaceutical and health technology industry collaboration.
The PhD will use genotype data from more than 88,000 participants in the HUNT Study, linked with Norwegian health registries and other population-based information. Research will investigate how genetic variation can identify and validate drug targets, explain disease risk and treatment effects, and improve prevention and treatment. A flagship application is prioritizing genetic drug targets for Alzheimer's disease.
Methods may include genome-wide association studies, drug-target Mendelian randomization, on- and off-target analyses, genetic target-trial emulation, pharmacoepidemiologic validation, polygenic prediction and functional bioinformatics. The candidate will work with the Genetic Epidemiology research group, participate in international collaborations, engage with industry partners, publish in peer-reviewed journals and may undertake a research stay abroad.
Applicants need a relevant Master's degree in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, biostatistics, genetics, computational biology or an equivalent discipline. The degree must include a substantial independent thesis of at least 30 ECTS. A Master's average equivalent to B or better, doctoral-programme eligibility and excellent English are required. Experience with genomic data, R or Python, Linux, high-performance computing, reproducible workflows, cohort or registry data and research publications is advantageous.
The position is full-time and salaried at normally NOK 580,000 gross per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, with a 2% pension contribution. Applications must include academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master's thesis or draft, motivation letter, relevant supporting documents and three referees. Apply electronically through Jobbnorge by 15 November 2026.
