About this position
PhD project on hydrogen and industrial decarbonization
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a three-year PhD Candidate position investigating the future role of hydrogen and hydrogen products in industrial decarbonization. The project is based at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at NTNU's Trondheim campus.
The research examines how alternative pathways toward a zero-emission industrial sector could reshape industrial production, value chains, competitiveness, energy-intensive activities and the location of industry. It will analyze the interaction between electrification, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS), while accounting for structural changes in industrial production systems.
The candidate will develop and assess scenarios for industrial transformation, hydrogen demand and infrastructure development. Key questions concern hydrogen demand across alternative decarbonization pathways; which sectors may rely on electrification, hydrogen or CCS; the effects of industrial transformation on hydrogen production, transport, storage and trade; the conditions needed for dedicated hydrogen infrastructure and markets; and how Norway and Europe can prepare for different industrial and energy-system transitions.
The successful researcher will conduct original scientific work, quantify hydrogen demand and infrastructure requirements, publish in international journals and conferences, and collaborate with academic, industry and public-sector partners. The project also includes required PhD coursework and dissemination of research findings.
The PhD candidate will join a multidisciplinary environment spanning energy economics, industrial economics, operations research and energy systems analysis. The position is affiliated with FME HYDROGENi, the Norwegian Research and Innovation Centre for Hydrogen and Ammonia, which brings together research and industry partners across the hydrogen value chain, including production, transport and storage, industrial and maritime applications, safety and future energy systems.
The candidate will be hosted by the Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research group within the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management and will work closely with researchers in NTNU's Department of Computer Science and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The research environment connects technology, economics, optimization and policy with practical challenges of the green transition.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree in a relevant field with strong academic results, normally B or better according to NTNU's grading scale. Relevant backgrounds include operations research or optimization, energy systems, energy economics, engineering disciplines with strong quantitative and analytical content, or closely related fields. Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills. Applicants in the final phase of their master's studies may apply, but appointment requires admission to the PhD programme in Industrial Economics and Technology Management within three months of employment. Advantageous qualifications include experience with energy-system modelling, scenario analysis, techno-economic analysis, quantitative modelling or data analysis; knowledge of hydrogen technologies, industrial decarbonization or climate policy; programming skills in Python, Julia, R, GAMS or similar tools; and an interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of technology, economics and policy. Applicants should also show intellectual curiosity, research motivation, independence, structured working habits, strong communication and collaboration skills, and suitability for interdisciplinary research.
How to apply
Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge. Include a motivation letter, a maximum one-page research plan, CV, diplomas and certificates, scientific works including the master's thesis, and names and contact information for at least two references. Applicants with education from abroad should also provide the required documentation of the scope and quality of their education.
