About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting a full-time PhD Candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim, Norway. The four-year project, Impacts of Interdependent Multi-Hazards on Transport Systems, is part of the STRIDE initiative under NTNU's More Resilient Society programme.
The research will examine how climate-driven hazards—including intense storms, floods, and water-induced landslides—interact with acute security threats such as targeted sabotage across transport networks. The candidate will develop a hybrid multi-hazard framework combining physics-based simulations with data-driven statistical and machine learning methods. The work will create spatiotemporal fragility functions to quantify how disruptions propagate along critical transport corridors.
The project sits at the intersection of civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport systems, environmental hazards, risk analysis, numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, and GIS/spatial data analysis. The candidate will participate in the Geotechnical research group, publish and disseminate research, engage in international activities, and contribute to teaching and supervision. The appointment consists of three years of doctoral research and one year of teaching and career-enhancing duties.
Applicants need a relevant master's degree in civil engineering or an equivalent discipline, including an independent project of at least 30 ECTS. Master's students may apply if they complete and document the degree before starting and no later than August 2027. A master's average equivalent to B or better is normally required, together with eligibility for NTNU's PhD programme and strong written and oral English. Preferred experience includes geotechnical engineering, landslide modelling, hydrology, fluid mechanics, numerical modelling, risk analysis, scientific programming, and GIS. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at A2 level or higher is an advantage.
The gross salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, with a 2% pension contribution. NTNU also offers pension benefits, working capital, mentoring, language training, and an international research environment. Applications must include academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, a research outline of up to 1,500 words/four pages, motivation letter, relevant supporting documents, and three referees. Apply electronically through Jobbnorge by 20 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants must have a relevant master's degree in civil engineering or an equivalent field, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Current master's students may apply, but must obtain and document the degree before starting and no later than August 2027. Applicants should have a strong academic record with a master's average grade equivalent to B or better on the NTNU scale, or demonstrate an equally strong foundation; candidates with weaker grades may be considered if exceptionally suited through relevant experience or peer-reviewed work. Applicants must meet admission requirements for NTNU's doctoral programme, have good written and oral English communication skills, and be able to work independently, systematically, collaboratively, under pressure, and analytically. Preferred qualifications include geotechnical engineering, landslide assessment and modelling, hydrology and fluid mechanics, numerical modelling, risk analysis, scientific programming, GIS/spatial data analysis, relevant work experience, publications, and Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at A2 level or higher.
How to apply
Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge by 20 November 2026. Include bachelor's and master's transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, a research project outline of up to 1,500 words/four pages, a short motivation letter, relevant publications or certificates, and contact details for three referees.
