About this position
This PhD project at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim and sits within the interdisciplinary STRIDE initiative, part of NTNU’s broader More Resilient Society programme.
The project focuses on how interdependent multi-hazards affect transport systems when climate-driven events and security threats occur together. It studies converging hazards such as storms, floods, and water-induced landslides alongside targeted sabotage across transport networks, with attention to how disruptions spread through critical transport corridors.
The successful candidate will develop a hybrid multi-hazard framework that combines physics-based simulation with data-driven statistical and machine learning methods. A key part of the work is the development of spatiotemporal fragility functions to understand and quantify cascading disruption effects in transport infrastructure.
The PhD candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment involving transport modelling, artificial intelligence, operations research, civil engineering, and science and technology studies. The project links closely with other PhD candidates working on interdependent hazards, multimodal transport modelling, and the societal dimensions of resilience and total defense.
The candidate will also participate in the Geotechnical research group at NTNU and engage in international activities such as conferences and research stays abroad.

What's required
Applicants must have a relevant master’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis. Master’s students may apply, but the degree must be completed and documented before starting the position and no later than August 2027. A strong relevant academic background is required, with an average grade equal to B or better on NTNU’s grading scale, or an equally strong overall academic foundation if no letter grades are used. Applicants must meet admission requirements for the PhD programme in the Faculty of Engineering Science at NTNU and have good written and oral English skills. Preferred qualifications include specialization in geotechnical engineering, experience with landslide assessment and modelling, courses in hydrology and fluid mechanics, strong interest in numerical modelling and risk analysis, proficiency in scientific programming and GIS/spatial data analysis, relevant work experience, publications, and Norwegian/Scandinavian oral and written skills at A2 or higher.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV, copy/draft of the master’s thesis, a project outline, a motivation letter, any relevant publications or certificates, and contact details for three referees. If your education was taken abroad, attach documentation of scope and quality, and any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement.
