About this position
NTNU is offering a PhD project in machine learning for the conservation of historic buildings. The position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action CHARM Doctoral Network, which develops resilient, sustainable and climate-adapted methods for conserving architectural heritage.
The project, titled “Understanding conservation condition and rehabilitation needs at district scale in time of energy saving and climate change via machine learning driven method,” focuses on using artificial intelligence to assess building deterioration at district and city scales. The researcher will work with data from photogrammetry, Earth observation imagery, building-stock databases and related sources.
The research will develop deep-learning neural networks, including convolutional neural networks, to detect cracks and morphological indicators, segment decay patterns and classify buildings according to their construction characteristics, materials, location, exposure and use. These analyses will support predictions of maintenance and restoration priorities, linking observed damage with energy-retrofit directives and risk maps.
Expected research activities include building high-quality datasets from raw information, developing semi-automatic decay-pattern mapping, defining indices for crack morphology, investigating damage in materials and hazard-prone buildings, and optimizing large-scale maintenance through machine-learning correlations. The role also includes in-situ condition-monitoring campaigns, validation of the developed framework, doctoral research education, publications and conference participation.
The main supervisor is Full Professor Chiara Bertolin, with Associate Professor Chao Gao as co-supervisor, in NTNU’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Dr. Marie Louise Anker of Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Works is the non-academic mentor. The wider CHARM network connects universities, research organizations, heritage authorities, industry, SMEs and NGOs across Europe and South America. The researcher will also have opportunities for secondments with FORTH in Crete and Cergy Paris University in France.

What's required
Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree, with 120 credits at master's level, in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering or an equivalent field. The master's degree must be completed and documented before starting. Applicants normally need a master's average equivalent to B or better on the NTNU scale and must meet admission requirements for the faculty's Engineering doctoral programme. Excellent written and oral English, a strong background in applying deep-learning neural networks to image segmentation related to materials and the built environment, and excellent Python and Matlab programming skills are required. Experience with 3D data processing, point clouds, geospatial analysis, condition monitoring, damage functions or analytical models is preferred. Applicants should demonstrate motivation, independence, teamwork and communication skills.
How to apply
Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 26 November 2026. Include bachelor's and master's transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, motivation letter, relevant publications or research work, certificates if applicable, and contact details for three referees. Documents must be in English; additional documentation is required for education completed abroad.
