About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting a full-time PhD Candidate in molecular medical microbiology at the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) in Trondheim, Norway.

The project, "Emerging technologies enabling rapid precision diagnostics of severe infection," is part of the interdisciplinary initiative Preparedness and Response to AMR, the silent pandemic. It addresses bloodstream infection and sepsis, where delayed diagnosis can lead to inadequate antimicrobial treatment and poor clinical outcomes.

The PhD researcher will develop and optimize magnetic nanobead-based enrichment of bacterial and yeast pathogens directly from whole blood. The work will combine rapid nucleic acid extraction with sensitive molecular and mass spectrometry-based detection methods, addressing low pathogen concentrations and host-derived background interference. The goal is an integrated diagnostic platform for faster, more accurate pathogen identification.

Applicants need a relevant Master's degree in molecular cell biology, biotechnology, microbiology or an equivalent field, with a substantial independent project, or an equivalent medical degree. A Master's degree must normally have a B average or better, and Master's students must complete and document their degree before starting and no later than January 2027. Strong English communication skills are required. Experience in microbiology, medical microbiology, bacterial culture, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, mass spectrometry, diagnostic assay development, nanotechnology or biomedical nanomaterials is desirable.

The appointment lasts four years, including three years of doctoral work and up to one year of career-promotion work. The salary is normally NOK 580,000 gross per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, with a 2% pension contribution. The position includes research support, career guidance, mentoring and Norwegian public-sector benefits.

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge by 20 November 2026. Submit academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master's thesis or draft, a short motivation letter, relevant research outputs, and contact details for three referees. Questions about the position may be directed to Professor Jan Egil Afset at [email protected].
