About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time PhD Candidate position in Microbiology at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science in Trondheim, Norway.
The project is based in the Bruheim research group and forms part of the NTNU-funded initiative Preparedness and Response to AMR, the silent pandemic. Research will investigate emerging technologies for understanding the mode of operation and activity of synthetic and natural antibacterial peptides against important pathogenic bacteria.
The work will combine advanced microbial cultivation with mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, fluxomics, lipidomics, protein-level analysis, metabolic flux characterization, and traditional microbial and bioanalytical assays. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Otterlei laboratory and another coordinated PhD project, contributing to joint publications and dissemination.
Applicants must hold, or be completing, a relevant master's degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or an equivalent discipline. A minimum 30-ECTS independent project equivalent to a master's thesis is required. A master's degree must be documented before employment begins and no later than 1 December 2026. A grade average of B or better, strong English communication skills, and eligibility for NTNU's Biotechnology PhD programme are normally required. Experience in analytical biochemistry, LC-MS, and large-scale data analysis is desirable.
The appointment lasts four years: three years of doctoral research plus one year of career-promotion work. The normal gross salary is NOK 580,000 per year, with additional employee benefits, working capital, mentoring, career guidance, and pension arrangements. The expected start is winter or early spring 2027.
Applications must be submitted electronically through Jobbnorge by 20 November 2026. Required materials include academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, a short motivation letter, relevant research outputs, and contact details for three referees.
