About this position
This PhD position is part of the NTNU interdisciplinary research project “Preparedness and Response to AMR, the silent pandemic”, linking clinical and molecular medicine with social science perspectives across several closely coordinated doctoral projects. The successful candidate will work at the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, within a broad, international research environment.
The project focuses on rapid precision diagnostics for severe infection, especially bloodstream infection and sepsis. The doctoral work aims to develop and optimize a method for magnetic nanobead-based enrichment of bacterial and yeast pathogens directly from whole blood, combined with rapid nucleic acid extraction and sensitive molecular and mass spectrometry-based detection. The research addresses the challenge of identifying low-abundance pathogens against a complex host background, with the goal of enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis for patients with bloodstream infections.
The PhD candidate will contribute to method development and optimization, work closely with researchers and students in the research group, and collaborate with other candidates in the wider interdisciplinary AMR project. The position offers an opportunity to engage in doctoral research that connects microbiology, molecular medicine, diagnostics, and biomedical technology, while contributing to academic publications and dissemination.
The project is led within NTNU by Professors Marit Otterlei and Heidrun Åm, and local contact for the position is Professor Jan Egil Afset.

What's required
Applicants must meet admission requirements for the faculty’s Doctoral Programme. A relevant Master’s degree in molecular cell biology, biotechnology, microbiology, or equivalent is required, with a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis; alternatively, applicants may hold an MD, and foreign medical degrees must be equivalent in scope to a Norwegian medical degree. Master’s students may apply if the degree is completed and documented before starting and no later than January 2027. Applicants need a strong academic background with an average grade of B or better on NTNU’s scale, or an equally strong academic foundation if letter grades are unavailable. Good written and oral English is required. Preferred qualifications include a strong background in microbiology and molecular medicine, experience in medical microbiology, practical laboratory skills such as bacterial culture, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, mass spectrometry, and diagnostic assay development, interest or experience in nanotechnology or nanomaterials in biomedical applications, experience in interdisciplinary research projects, good written and oral proficiency in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, and strong collaborative, communication and interpersonal skills.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include transcripts and diplomas for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, CV, master’s thesis or draft, a short motivation letter, any relevant publications or certificates, and contact details for three referees. If your education was completed abroad, include documentation of the scope and quality of your degrees and any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement.
