About this position

The University of Vienna is advertising a University assistant predoctoral / PhD candidate position in the Faculty of Physics within the Quantum Nanophysics team led by Prof. Markus Arndt. The project is linked to Q4-BIO, a new research direction at the interface of quantum physics, biomolecular chemistry, and experimental nanophysics.

The research focuses on universal matter-wave interferometry at high mass and high complexity, including organic molecules, metal clusters, dielectric nanoparticles, molecular beams, levitated optomechanics, quantum sensing, mass spectrometry, and biomolecular chemistry. The team also works within the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (qAustria), the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), and the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ).

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a completed Master's degree or Diploma in physics, or an equivalent qualification allowing PhD enrollment at the University of Vienna. Strong experimental background is essential, especially hands-on experience in at least two of the following: molecular beam sources, cryogenic ultra-high-vacuum systems, superconducting nanowire detectors, advanced optics, laser systems and frequency conversion, mass spectrometry, or matter-wave research. Excellent English is required, and candidates should be able to document laboratory design, construction, and troubleshooting skills.

Funding and terms: this is a paid university assistant position with a 4-year employment duration. The salary starts at EUR 3,776.10 gross per month (40h/week, 14 payments/year), with possible increases for recognized experience. The contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and may be extended to the full 4 years.

Application: submit one English PDF containing a scientific CV, a short statement of research interests, a one-page motivation letter referencing a relevant recent publication from quantumnano.at, and a summary of academic and research achievements. Deadline: 2026-08-11.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply
