About this position
The University of Vienna is offering a fully funded PhD position in analyzing polymer degradation by soil enzymes within the MSCA Doctoral Network AGRIPOLYS. The doctoral researcher will join the EDGE group at the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) in Vienna, Austria.
The project applies environmental analytical chemistry and high-resolution mass spectrometry to investigate enzymatic degradation pathways of promising polymer classes in agricultural soils. The research aims to clarify the activity and specificity of soil enzymes, support the development of soil-biodegradable polymers, and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
Responsibilities include developing and completing a dissertation, conducting experiments, developing analytical methods, publishing and presenting research internationally, and contributing to research administration. The successful candidate will also participate in the VDS MES doctoral school and is expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12–18 months.
Applicants should have a master’s degree in analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, food chemistry, microbiology, or a related field. Relevant laboratory experience is advantageous. C1-level spoken and written English, motivation, independence, and reliability are required.
The position is fully funded for three years, with a basic full-time salary of EUR 3,776.10 under the collective bargaining agreement.
