About this position
This PhD position at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) focuses on how mobile networks can cooperate to keep critical services running when failures, congestion, or recovery events disrupt normal operation.
The project sits in NTNU’s Beyond 5G lab and is centered on resilient service continuity across multi-operator mobile network systems. The work looks at how independently operated networks can coordinate resources and priorities while still retaining their own policies and limited visibility into each other’s internal state. A major theme is understanding the mechanisms, data paths, and open interfaces needed to support service continuity when services move between networks or when capacity is constrained.
Research questions include how networks should exchange information for admission and resource allocation decisions, how service priorities can be coordinated across heterogeneous systems, and how network selection, traffic steering, and recovery mechanisms can maintain application continuity without triggering repeated switching or overload cascades. The project also considers how shared infrastructure, leased capacity, and inter-operator dependencies affect failure propagation and the resilience gained from alternative network access.
The research environment combines experimental systems work with both commercial and open-source mobile network deployments, with simulation and analytical modeling available to study conditions beyond the scale of physical testbeds. The position is connected to the Networking research group and includes academic dissemination, conference activity, possible research stays abroad, and teaching in networking-related courses.
The workplace will be in Trondheim, and the position is hosted by NTNU, one of Norway’s leading technical universities with a strong research environment in communications networks and networked services.

What's required
Applicants must meet admission requirements for the faculty’s Doctoral Programme in Information Security and Communication Technology and hold a relevant master's degree in communication networks, wireless and mobile communications, information security and distributed systems, or equivalent. The degree must include a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU’s grading scale; applicants with weaker grades may still be considered if exceptionally suited through relevant work experience and/or peer-reviewed academic work. Master’s students may apply, but the master’s degree must be completed and documented before starting, preferably within August 2027. Excellent oral and written presentation skills in English are required. Preference is given to candidates with practical experience with 5G radio access and core deployments, hands-on experience with communication networks in multi-vendor and softwarized environments, exposure to resilience and dependability topics, teaching experience at master’s level, and good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no before the deadline. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV, copy of master’s thesis or draft, a scientific proposal, a short motivation letter, publications or other relevant research work, relevant certificates, and contact details for three referees. If applicable, add documentation of foreign education and grading scale information.
