About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a three-year PhD Candidate position in sustainable and cement-free marine materials at the Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering in Gjøvik, Norway.

The successful candidate will join the HAPMarine project, an interdisciplinary initiative developing low-carbon, bioreceptive, and high-strength materials for marine infrastructure and cold-water coral reef restoration. The research will upcycle calcium-rich waste streams, including aquaculture shells and demolition concrete, into sustainable shell-based materials and hybrid shell–concrete geopolymer composites.

Research activities include optimizing forming conditions and material performance, comprehensive characterization, numerical simulation, carbonation routes for CO2 capture, and collaboration on field testing, leaching analysis, and ecological assessment. Project partners include researchers from the University of Tokyo and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research.

Applicants should have a relevant master's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, civil or structural engineering, ocean engineering, or an equivalent discipline, together with experience in concrete, geopolymer, or other building materials. A master's grade equivalent to B or better, eligibility for NTNU's Engineering PhD programme, and excellent written and oral English are required. Experience with XRD, SEM, FTIR, MIP, COMSOL or ANSYS, SCI publications, green or bio-concrete, and waste valorization is advantageous.

The position offers a gross annual salary normally of NOK 580,000, subject to qualifications and seniority, plus employee benefits and Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund membership. Apply in English with the required academic documents, a two-page project proposal, three referees, and relevant publications by 17 November 2026.
