About this position

CEITEC Masaryk University in Brno is advertising a PhD Candidate position in the Gabriel Demo Research Group on the question: How do viruses hijack the cell's protein factory?

The project focuses on virology, ribosome biology, translation, biochemistry, quantitative proteomics, and structural biology. The successful candidate will investigate how viral replication/transcription complexes interact with host ribosomes and translation factors to promote viral gene expression. The work combines molecular virology, wet-lab biochemistry, cell culture virology, ribosome complex assembly, and advanced structural methods including single-particle cryo-electron microscopy and/or cryo-electron tomography.

This is a PhD opening with a part-time contract complemented by a PhD stipend. CEITEC MU provides access to state-of-the-art core facilities, experienced staff, flexible working hours, professional development support, and a benefits package including paid holiday, medical insurance, meal contribution, kindergarten/pension contribution, Multisport card, mental health care, and sports lessons on campus.

Eligibility highlights: MSc or equivalent in biochemistry, virology, or structural biology; practical wet-lab experience in virology/translation; theoretical knowledge of cryo-EM or cryo-ET; good English. Helpful extras include cryo-EM data analysis experience, strong communication skills, motivation, and a collaborative mindset.

Application deadline: 30 November 2026. Start date: February 2027 (by negotiation, based on spring semester start date). Apply through the e-application and include a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and contacts for at least two references.
