About this position

This PhD project at Maastricht University focuses on spatial multi-omics and single-cell analysis of human diseases. The successful candidate will work at the Maastricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging (M4i) Institute within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, contributing to next-generation biomedical research that links molecular information across tissues, cell populations, and local microenvironments.

The research aims to advance understanding of disease mechanisms by integrating spatial and cellular molecular data to identify biomarkers and support more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. You will develop and apply advanced workflows that combine tissue-level and single-cell resolution, using patient-derived samples and multidimensional datasets to study how molecular patterns and cellular interactions shape disease development and progression.

The project sits at the interface of molecular imaging, omics, pathology, and computational analysis. You will work with state-of-the-art technologies including MALDI mass spectrometry imaging, laser microdissection, spatial transcriptomics, single-cell omics, digital pathology, and AI-driven data analysis. The work includes both method development and application across a range of biomedical questions, with emphasis on translational research.

You will be part of an international, multidisciplinary environment with expertise in molecular imaging, mass spectrometry, computational biology, pathology, and clinical research. The position is supervised by Dr. Eva Cuypers and offers the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant research community at M4i, an institute known for its advanced imaging infrastructure and collaborative research culture.
