About this position

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is seeking a Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Research for a 3-year, full-time post based in London. This unique opportunity is focused on infectious diseases, metagenomics, diagnostics, fever research, and next-generation sequencing, with strong public health relevance. The position is a collaboration between LSHTM, UKHSA Porton Down, and the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, offering a rich, interdisciplinary research environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a PhD as part of the post, with excellent opportunities for publication and direct impact on public health decisions. The research will involve developing and conducting studies on next-generation sequencing diagnostic approaches for patients with fever, including those with neurological presentations and those returning from outside the UK. The role will work closely with Professors Emma Thomson and Michael Marks, as well as collaborators at UKHSA.

Applicants must be clinically qualified, hold a postgraduate degree (such as an MSc) in a relevant field, possess a GMC license to practice, and have clinical experience in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, or Virology. Experience in diagnostics metagenomics, either in the lab or through bioinformatics, is essential. The position is funded by the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit, with a salary range of £65,048 to £73,992 per annum plus a London Allowance of £2,162. Additional benefits include 30 days annual leave, discretionary Wellbeing Days, and pension scheme membership.

Applications should be submitted online via the LSHTM jobs portal by 8 April 2026. The supporting statement must address each selection criterion in detail. For further information or queries, contact [email protected]. This is an outstanding opportunity for a clinically qualified candidate interested in combining clinical insight, molecular diagnostics, and translational research in a world-leading public health institution.
