About this position
KU Leuven is offering a PhD position on developing methodological standards for studying the effectiveness of new digital interventions. The post sits at the intersection of the Methodology of Educational Science Research Group (CMPO) and the Center for Contextual Psychiatry (CCP), bringing together expertise in advanced statistical modeling, research methodology, experience sampling, and clinical intervention research.
The project is part of eMotion, a recently funded large-scale research program focused on developing new treatments for the negative symptoms of psychosis. The PhD student will contribute to a statistical framework for optimizing the design of Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMIs) using Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs). The work combines Virtual Reality (VR) and the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) to study approach-avoidance mechanisms underlying amotivation and to improve the design, effectiveness, and evaluation of digital mobile mental health interventions.
Research tasks include applying quantitative methods to ESM data, including time series analysis and multilevel modeling; developing novel methods for constructing EMIs; advancing EMI-VR integration; and producing publications for international peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers across methodological, psychosis, and digital mental health research lines, and will work in a dynamic interdisciplinary environment with clinical psychologists, experimental psychologists, psychiatrists, and statisticians.
The ideal applicant holds a master’s degree in psychology or a related field such as mental health, psychiatry, social sciences, or health sciences. Strong quantitative and statistical skills are essential, while experience with ESM is highly desirable. The position also requires a commitment to open science and excellent English proficiency (C1 level).
The appointment starts flexibly but no later than 1 March 2027. Funding is available through the eMotion project, with an initial one-year contract renewable for up to three additional years after positive evaluation. KU Leuven notes that PhD salaries are competitive by international standards.
Applications should be submitted via the university job portal. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, BSc and MSc diplomas/transcripts, and contact details for at least two referees, plus any additional material such as a publication list. Questions may be directed to Prof. Ginette Lafit at [email protected].
