About this position

PhD Doctoral Candidate (DC12) – HyNOISE

The University of Cambridge Engineering Department is recruiting one doctoral candidate for a 36-month HyNOISE Doctoral Network project on systematic data assimilation for predicting thermoacoustic instabilities in hydrogen-fuelled gas turbines. The research combines aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, aeroacoustics, combustion, computational fluid dynamics and Bayesian modelling.

The project will extend UCAM’s AXIOM adjoint-accelerated inference and optimization method to hydrogen flame geometries and industrial gas-turbine configurations. The doctoral researcher will assimilate experimental data from laboratory and industrial test rigs, large-eddy simulation data and candidate mean-field flame models into thermoacoustic models. Research objectives include modelling acoustic fields, identifying optimal models using Bayesian model selection, designing informative experiments, predicting indirect noise and optimizing burner designs to reduce noise and susceptibility to thermoacoustic instability.

Planned secondments include approximately two months at the Technical University of Berlin in Germany and two months at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. The work is conducted within an international academic–industry consortium focused on hydrogen combustion, quiet and stable power-generation and transport technologies, and the green transition.

Eligibility: Applicants need an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a related subject, with knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, numerical analysis, simulation, optimization, modelling and CFD. Strong English communication, teamwork, independent problem-solving and willingness to travel are required. Candidates must not hold a doctoral degree at recruitment and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule for the United Kingdom.

Funding and timing: The appointment is funded by Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Networks for 36 months, with a competitive salary including living and mobility allowances and, where eligible, a family allowance. The expected start period is January–October 2027. Applications close on 31 December 2026 at 23:59 CEST.
