About this position
This PhD project at the University of Limerick focuses on enhancing biodiversity and selected ecosystem services within industrial landscapes through evidence-based land management. The research combines ecological field surveys with experimental management interventions to identify practical strategies that can improve biodiversity, soil function, and carbon storage while still supporting operational land-use requirements.
Working in collaboration with industry partners, the PhD candidate will examine how existing habitats and current management practices influence biodiversity and ecosystem services, which interventions can improve outcomes, and where those interventions should be prioritised across a site to maximise ecological benefit. The project is designed to produce practical recommendations and support tools that help organisations strengthen environmental performance across industrial sites.
The studentship offers training in ecology, biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem service assessment, and GIS, with opportunities for scientific publication and applied impact. It is well suited to candidates interested in ecology, ecological restoration, environmental management, and sustainable land management in real-world settings.
The post is a fully funded PhD studentship for four years. Funding includes an annual tax-free stipend of €25,000, full EU tuition fees, and support for approved research, training, and conference activities.
Applicants should normally hold a Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Natural Resource Management, or a related area, or a Bachelor's degree with relevant field research experience. Strong analytical and communication skills are expected, and experience with ecological surveys, GIS, statistical analysis, remote sensing, or environmental monitoring would be an advantage. A full driving licence is desirable because fieldwork and travel to partner sites are involved.
The application deadline is 21 November 2026. Applications should include a CV, transcripts and degree certificates, a two-page cover letter, and contact details for two academic referees. Submit materials by email to [email protected] and mark the application “Ecosystem Services PhD”.
