About this position

PhD Fellow in Marine Molecular Ecology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics / Norwegian College of Fishery Science.

The project is part of the national flagship initiative Arctic Ocean 2050 and is hosted by the Research Group for Genetics. The research focuses on the molecular ecology of fishes and other marine communities in the Arctic Ocean, using environmental DNA (eDNA), seawater samples, natural samplers, community samples, video surveys, and conventional survey methods to study fish diversity, connectivity, biodiversity, ecological interactions, and molecular food webs.

This is a PhD opening for a four-year appointment. The nominal PhD training period is three years, with the fourth year allocated 25% per year to teaching and other duties. The workplace is Tromsø, Norway. The successful candidate will join a cross-disciplinary team of scientists, PhD students, and technical staff, and will contribute to teaching in Fish Biology and Aquatic Molecular Ecology.

Required background: a master’s degree or equivalent in molecular ecology, molecular biology, or genetics; documented DNA extraction experience; PCR and/or qPCR experience; bioinformatic or statistical analysis of DNA sequence data; knowledge of fish and marine aquatic taxonomy; and documented English proficiency. Admission to the PhD programme at UiT is required, including degree and grade requirements. Applicants with a PhD or equivalent competence are not eligible.

Preferred experience includes eDNA and community sampling, clean lab work, metabarcoding or shotgun sequencing, fish survey methods, fieldwork and research cruises, ecological niche theory and food webs, teaching, outreach, and Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Funding: salary is listed as 580,000 NOK/year with a 3% annual increase, plus state pension and employee benefits. The position is fixed-term.

How to apply: submit the application via Jobbnorge before the deadline and include the requested documents: cover letter, CV, diplomas and transcripts, translations if needed, grading explanation for foreign education, English documentation, references, and thesis/academic works. Near-complete master’s students may apply with a draft thesis and a statement from their supervisor or institution.

Deadline: 9 November 2026.
