About this position
PhD Fellowship in Gender and Technology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, based in the Centre for Women’s and Gender Research (SKK), Department of Philosophy (IFF), Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, campus Tromsø.
This PhD position is part of the research initiative Gender, AI and Technological Engagements (GATE): Towards Informed Futures, led by Associate Professor Ania Malinowska. The fellowship invites an original doctoral project on the intersections of gender, artificial intelligence, technological change, and social life. The project is explicitly interdisciplinary, drawing on gender studies, STS, critical AI studies, affect theory, and digital humanities.
Possible topics include gendered bias in AI systems and datasets, gender identities in interaction with AI agents and digital assistants, intimacy and care in human-machine encounters, algorithmic exclusion and gendered knowledge production, labour and automation, gender-informed methods for studying intelligent technologies, and AI futures in the High North, including minority languages, Indigenous contexts, and geographical inequalities.
The successful candidate will develop a focused doctoral project with a clear research question, relevant theory, appropriate methods, research ethics, and a realistic completion plan. Methods may be qualitative, digital, historical, experimental, or practice-based. Depending on the project, there may be opportunities to engage with research hardware and intelligent systems such as Hypnotic AI, subject to agreement and availability.
The position is full-time for three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension for career-development activities if the thesis is submitted in time. If the dissertation is submitted within 3 or 3.5 years, the candidate may qualify for a completion grant of 12 or 6 months. The expected start date is August 2027, and shortlisted candidates should expect interviews by April.
Eligibility requires a relevant master’s degree or equivalent in a related field such as gender studies, humanities, social sciences, STS, media and cultural studies, or similar. Admission to the PhD programme at UiT is required for employment. Applicants must demonstrate strong English proficiency; Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is beneficial. A grade point average of B or equivalent is required for admission, and foreign degrees may be subject to additional equivalency checks.
Funding includes a salary of 580,000 NOK per year with a 3% yearly increase, plus access to additional funding opportunities for an extended research stay abroad. The role also offers supervision, academic collaboration, open access dissemination opportunities, and participation in a supportive and inclusive research environment at SKK.
Apply via Jobbnorge with a cover letter, CV, degree diplomas and transcripts, translations where relevant, English documentation, references, master’s thesis, and an 8–10 page project description including references. Applicants who are finishing their master’s degree may apply, but the degree must be completed before taking up the post.
