About this position

This PhD position is based in the Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and is part of the research group Information systems and computer-human interaction (ISCHI). The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary setting that connects information systems, sociotechnical analysis, and wider work on resilience and democratic robustness.

The project focuses on digital identity wallets in Norway, especially the emerging European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet and its implications for public and private services. The research examines how these wallets fit into existing digital identity infrastructures, how they interact with established practices and habits, and how their development is shaped by technical, political, institutional, and cultural conditions.

The position is embedded in the project “Cryptology and social life: Sovereignty, security and society meet digital wallets”, which brings together perspectives from information systems, STS, sociology, ethnography, and cryptology. The PhD candidate will work empirically with stakeholders and contribute to understanding the ecosystem of current solutions, the historical evolution of digital identity infrastructures, and a comparative view of Norway alongside other European efforts.

The post offers a strong research environment with seminars, guests, collaborative activities, conference opportunities, international publication, and engagement with societal actors. The project is designed as a full doctoral trajectory, with opportunities to develop research skills in an interdisciplinary setting while contributing to work on secure, privacy-preserving, and democratically aligned digital identity infrastructures.
