About this position

PhD opportunity: Adaptive collective decision-making in robot swarms at the University of Southampton (Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Electronics and Computer Science).

This project sits at the intersection of robotics, computer science, artificial intelligence, and mathematical modelling. It explores how autonomous robot swarms can make robust collective decisions in changing environments by adaptively choosing which robots participate, how much information is needed, and when decisions should be revisited.

Research directions include adaptive swarm subsets, dynamic consensus, information-driven participation, uncertainty-aware decision-making, and conflicts between competing swarm objectives. You will develop and evaluate algorithms using simulation and physical multi-robot platforms, with methods that may include distributed algorithms, probabilistic decision-making, swarm intelligence, and online adaptation.

The lab provides access to a range of robotic platforms, including robot dogs, ground rovers, quadcopters, robotic arms, and more. Potential applications include search and rescue, environmental monitoring, exploration, autonomous logistics, and other complex multi-robot missions.

Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, engineering, or a closely related discipline. Applicants should have strong interest in autonomous systems/robotics/AI, the ability to conduct independent research and critically evaluate literature, and good programming skills (preferably Python).

Funding: Competition funded PhD project. Funding may include fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, or studentships covering UK-level tuition fees and a living stipend for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

How to apply: Apply online for the Research programme (2027/28), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and search for PhD Computer Science (7089). Add the supervisor name in section 2 and submit a research proposal, CV, two references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.
