About this position
PhD opportunity in AI, diversity, and cardiology at Amsterdam UMC, in collaboration with Erasmus MC and Radboudumc. The project is part of the Dutch Heart Foundation-funded DIVERSE-CVD programme and focuses on improving cardiovascular risk prediction through diversity-aware artificial intelligence.
You will work with large clinical datasets and population biobanks containing electrocardiogram (ECG) data and cardiovascular outcomes. The research aims to develop and evaluate AI models that predict the onset and progression of atrial fibrillation, including post-operative atrial fibrillation, while accounting for population diversity.
The role includes building reusable data preprocessing pipelines, transforming clinical data into research-ready datasets, developing and evaluating machine learning and deep learning models, improving reproducibility through APIs and documentation, and publishing/presenting findings at conferences.
Eligibility highlights: a completed master's degree in biomedical engineering, technical medicine, computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field; affinity with cardiology/cardiovascular research; experience with Python and/or R; experience with cloud computing and/or Unix-based high-performance computing; and strong organisational, communication, and collaboration skills.
Funding and conditions: the position is funded by the Dutch Heart Foundation, offered through Amsterdam UMC Research BV, and starts with a 12-month contract intended to extend to four years. Salary is €3,108–€3,939 gross per month (full-time), plus an end-of-year bonus and additional employment benefits.
Applications are reviewed continuously, and the vacancy may close early once filled. For questions, contact dr. A. Floriaan Schmidt at [email protected].
