About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Sheffield in behaviour change, environmental science, pollution reduction, and social science methodologies.

This project asks: How do you turn an exhibition into a behaviour change intervention that can reduce pollution? It is part of the NERC-funded ECOSOLUTIONS Doctoral Focal Award, a transdisciplinary programme led by the Universities of Sheffield and York and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. The project is co-designed with non-academic partners and focuses on how exhibition materials such as Confluence for Change can increase awareness of chemical pollution and encourage people to monitor and change behaviours that contribute to pollution in water systems.

The research combines an online survey with a representative sample of UK residents, a control comparison, and a factorial design testing exhibition materials and self-monitoring. The project also includes co-design of an online or paper monitoring form, followed by measurement of beliefs and behaviour immediately after monitoring and again one month later. The topic sits at the intersection of environmental science, psychology, data science, and policy-oriented sustainability research.

Funding: full scholarship, 45 months, tuition covered, and an annual stipend at UKRI recommended levels (£21,805 for 2026/2027, TBC for 2027/2028).

Eligibility: at least an upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Essential skills include social science methodologies. The programme welcomes applicants worldwide, though funding rules mean some projects have limited international places and UK/Home candidates from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.

How to apply: read the ECOSOLUTIONS project information on the programme website and follow the application instructions there. The post also invites you to register your interest via FindAPhD.

Deadline: 30 November 2026.
