About this position
PhD position in Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Groningen
This is a 4-year PhD opening at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), University of Groningen, Netherlands. The project investigates how sleep loss and sleep disruption affect fear memory formation, emotional memory processing, and the development of maladaptive or traumatic memories. The research sits at the intersection of behavioural neuroscience, neural circuits, and molecular mechanisms.
The work uses advanced experimental approaches including optogenetics, chemogenetics (DREADDs), memory engram tagging, cFos expression analysis, dendritic spine imaging, and mouse behavioural experiments. The project aims to link circuit-level activity to behavioural outcomes and understand how sleep influences brain circuits and memory consolidation.
The position is part of a larger ZONMW-funded research programme and involves collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience. Supervision is by Prof. Robbert Havekes at the Neurobiology group within GELIFES.
Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field, strong interest in learning and memory research, and experience with animal/rodent research. Strong English skills and good communication/writing skills are required. Preferred experience includes surgical techniques, optogenetics, and memory engram methods.
The role is a full-time employment contract (1.0 FTE) with a salary of €3,059–€3,881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, vacation hours, and professional development opportunities. The application deadline is 23 May 2026.
Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, motivation letter, list of examination marks, and 3 academic references via the University of Groningen application portal.
