[Funded studentship providing fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD Studentship at the University of Exeter focused on developing bioresorbable, regenerative scaffolds and additive manufacturing strategies for engineering the screw–bone interface. The project addresses a major clinical challenge in spinal surgery: screw loosening and pull-out, especially in patients with poor bone quality. Rather than relying only on conventional fixation devices, the research aims to create ...

Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Glasgow in Biomedical Engineering , Rheology , Biophysics , and Mechanobiology . The project asks whether the mechanics of tissues can reveal disease by measuring how biological tissues deform, flow, and relax. The research builds on i-Rheo-Indent technology to uncover mechanical biomarkers of disease through rapid, broadband viscoelastic measurements. The work sits at the intersection of fundamental physics, soft matter, biomedical engineering, ...

About this position

[PhD studentship funded by BBSRC through the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), in partnership with the University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham explores how shock-induced tissue injury can be understood and prevented using dynamic nanofluidics. The project sits at the interface of mechanobiology, biomaterials, and high-rate mechanical energy absorption, asking how biological tissues respond to different shock conditions such as magnitude, duration, rise time, loading rate, and transmitted energy.

The research builds on prior work showing that water can be squeezed into hydrophobic nanopores to create efficient, reusable shock absorption at very short timescales. In this project, that concept will be extended into biological systems to investigate how stress waves and energy transmission affect cell viability, tissue deformation, inflammatory gene expression, and cracking or integrity damage in tissues.

The student will use compression and shock techniques ranging from static loading to microsecond and nanosecond pulses, together with in-situ characterisation methods. A flexible platform of porous materials and liquids will be used, including metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, silica, and aerogels, enabling control over loading timescale, pressure amplitude, rise time, and mechanical microenvironment. This makes the project especially relevant to researchers interested in nanofluidics, porous materials, biomechanics, and biological injury mechanisms.

This is a funded PhD studentship associated with the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), funded by BBSRC and delivered in partnership with the University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester.
