About this position
PhD opportunity: Cardiac cell metabolism in inflammatory arthritis at Queen Mary University of London (William Harvey Research Institute), supervised by Prof M Perretti.
This project investigates how inflammatory arthritis increases cardiovascular risk and how chronic joint inflammation alters the metabolism and function of cardiac macrophages, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells. The research aims to define temporal changes in cardiac cell states during evolving cardiac dysfunction, understand how mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and metabolic rewiring shape cardiac inflammation and tissue remodelling, and test whether targeted metabolic and pro-resolving interventions can protect the heart while controlling joint inflammation.
Research training includes experimental arthritis and cardiovascular models, echocardiography, cardiac immunology, multiparameter flow cytometry, mitochondrial and oxidative-stress assays, qPCR, RNA sequencing, metabolomics, lipidomics, and translational analysis of patient samples.
Ideal background: immunology, cardiovascular biology, pharmacology, metabolism, or molecular medicine. Experience in cell biology, flow cytometry, or experimental models is an advantage.
Funding: fully funded Doctoral Candidate position within the HARPNET Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network, with an employment contract and MSCA living and mobility allowances; family allowances may apply where eligible.
Eligibility: candidates of any nationality may apply. Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain by October 2026, a Master’s degree (or equivalent) that permits doctoral enrolment at QMUL. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree, must be proficient in English, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule (not more than 12 months in the UK during the 36 months before recruitment).
