About this position

PhD opportunity in Compact Terahertz Instruments for Space Terahertz Astronomy at Observatoire de Paris (LIRA), in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA).

The project focuses on developing compact THz heterodyne instruments for future space science missions, building on LIRA’s THERA group work on Schottky diode technology used in ESA’s JUICE mission Submillimeter Wave Instrument. Research directions include new integration paradigms for shrinking THz Schottky-based receivers, reviewing packaging and interfacing solutions, investigating compact front-end integration using traditional mechanical manufacturing or silicon machining, and exploring new MMIC schemes with multi-harmonics simulations.

The work combines theoretical study, design, and RF measurements at LIRA, with possible stays at ETEC premises. This is a strong fit for candidates interested in physics, electrical engineering, astronomy, terahertz systems, RF design, MMIC, and electromagnetics.

Eligibility highlights: solid background in high frequency electronics and electromagnetics theory; strong problem-solving ability; good writing skills; team spirit; and experience with Advanced Design System, Ansys HFSS, or similar tools is a plus.

Location: Paris, France. Deadline: 31 December 2026. Contact the supervisors by email for more information; only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
