About this position
PhD position in Computer Science and Digital Health at the University of Geneva, within the Quality of Life Technologies (QoL) Lab. The project focuses on computational modeling of health trajectories in chronic and long-term conditions, with a special emphasis on breast cancer.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of machine learning, deep learning, wearable sensing, smartphone-based data collection, patient-reported outcomes, quality of life, and clinical research. The research aims to develop and validate digital measures of health that are meaningful for patients and clinicians, and to explore how sensor-derived data can complement traditional outcome measures in long-term care.
The project is embedded in the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) EMBED Research Project and includes a prospective longitudinal study with Swiss patients from the Breast Cancer Center of the University of Geneva Hospitals (HUG). Methods include mixed methods, interviews, surveys, focus groups, passive wearable data collection, smartphone data, and computational modeling. The candidate will also contribute to retrospective EHR data management and to the development of the mQoL Living Lab software infrastructure.
Applicants should have an MSc in computer science, bioinformatics, human-computer interaction, or a related field, with excellent results. Strong English and French proficiency is required. Experience with data science and ML tools such as pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and TensorFlow/Keras is expected to be useful. The post is open only to EU/Swiss candidates because of funding constraints.
This is a fully funded PhD position for up to 5 years, with a start date no later than 1 January 2027. The application deadline is 13 July 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically as a single PDF to the listed supervisors, with further details available via the job link.
