About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in Computing Rare Climate Event Probabilities Using Stochastic Modelling and Advanced Sampling Methods.

This project sits in the School of Mathematics and focuses on applied mathematics, applied statistics, climate science, and data analysis/data science. The research aims to compute probabilities of rare extreme climate events, especially heatwaves, using stochastic differential equations (SDEs), Monte Carlo and importance sampling methods, dimensionality reduction, machine learning, and large deviations theory. A key theme is connecting instanton-based rare-event analysis with efficient sampling strategies to reduce computational cost while improving uncertainty quantification.

Supervisors: Dr Nadhir Ben Rached and Dr Steve Fitzgerald.

Funding: This is a fully funded NERC studentship through the UNRISK CDT. Funding includes full tuition fees, a stipend at standard UKRI rates, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics or statistics, good Python skills, and a solid understanding of probability. Experience with stochastic calculus or stochastic numerical methods is desirable; mathematical physics knowledge is a plus but not required.

Location: Leeds, United Kingdom.

Deadline: 2027-01-13.

Funding details

What's required

A strong background in mathematics or statistics is required, with experience in Python programming and a solid understanding of probability. Familiarity with stochastic calculus and stochastic numerical methods is advantageous. Knowledge of mathematical physics would be beneficial but is not essential. The student should be motivated to develop new mathematical and computational techniques for climate science and rare extreme events.
