About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in Digital Twins for Flood-Resilient Infrastructure.

This project, FlooDT (Digital Twin for flood-resilient infrastructure management), focuses on developing and implementing a Digital Twin to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure such as dikes and bridges against flooding. The research combines civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental science, computer science, machine learning, numerical modelling, hydrodynamic simulation, and data assimilation.

The PhD candidate will develop functional Digital Twin modules for risk analysis, scenario modelling, and monitoring-data processing; build hybrid physics-based / machine-learning models for flood risk; validate the methods on simplified systems and real case studies; and help implement the tools into end-user platforms. The role also includes stakeholder engagement, workshops, presentations, and collaboration with a broad international consortium.

The project is funded by NWO and led by TU Delft, with partners including ETH Zurich, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Deltares, and Rijkswaterstaat. The candidate will join the Flood Risk and Hydraulic Structures section within the Department of Hydraulic Engineering and work in a collaborative, international research environment.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Hydro-informatics, or a related field; experience in numerical modelling, hydrodynamic simulation, and data management; knowledge of machine learning; strong programming skills (e.g. Python, SQL, Java, PyTorch); excellent English; and a proactive, research-driven mindset. Prior internship experience with non-academic institutions is desirable.

Funding and conditions: 4-year PhD appointment, salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also offers health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 18 November 2026. The expected start date is March/April 2027.
