About this position

Utrecht University is advertising a 2-year postdoc in machine learning for wind flow prediction in coastal dunes within the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Physical Geography. The project combines numerical modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and machine learning to improve wind field predictions for coastal dune models and support better coastal dune management.

The successful candidate will evaluate current wind field predictions from the coastal dune model AeoLiS against field measurements and/or CFD simulations, identify where simplified assumptions fail, and train a data-driven surrogate wind field model using methods such as PySR or neural networks. The surrogate will then be integrated with AeoLiS and tested on existing case studies. The role may also involve contributing to field data collection and sharing results through stakeholder meetings, conferences, and journal publications.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a PhD by the start date in Data Sciences, Computer Sciences, Physics, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Strong skills in data science, AI/machine learning, numerical modelling, and programming (preferably Python) are required. Experience with CFD and AeoLiS is a plus, as is familiarity with aeolian field measurements. Strong English communication skills and a collaborative, curious attitude are expected.

Funding and terms: the position is 1.0 FTE for 24 months, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706 to €5,760 (scale 10, based on a 38-hour week), plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The preferred start date is 1 January 2027, though flexible; the contract must end by 31 December 2028.

How to apply: submit your application via the university’s Apply Now button. Prepare a CV (max 2 pages), a motivation letter (max 1 page), and the names and contact details of at least two references. The deadline is 6 November 2026.
