About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in dynamic electromagnetic metasurfaces for advanced wave engineering.
This project focuses on electromagnetic metasurfaces, active metasurfaces, nonreciprocal wave propagation, frequency conversion, RF characterisation, and antenna/sensor design. The research aims to develop dynamic, time-varying metasurface structures that can steer, amplify, and reconfigure electromagnetic waves in real time for next-generation antennas, sensors, and communication systems.
You will work on the full pipeline from electromagnetic theory and full-wave simulation to prototype fabrication and measurement. The project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, within an active research group working on active and time-modulated electromagnetic systems.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. Funding may include fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, or studentships with tuition coverage and a living-cost stipend, awarded on a rolling basis.
Entry requirements: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent. English language qualification required if applicable.
How to apply: submit an online PhD application, choose Research for 2027/28 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, select full-time or part-time, search for PhD Electronic & Electrical Engineering (7092), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, and transcripts/certificates.
