About this position
Aarhus University is recruiting a PhD student for a project on dynamic flood exposure in Denmark and the question of where people will live as flood risk increases. The research addresses a major limitation in long-term flood-adaptation planning: projections often assume that households and buildings remain fixed in their current locations for the next 80–100 years.
The PhD project will model how household location decisions influence future flood exposure and how these changing patterns can inform Danish climate-adaptation policy. The researcher will work with Danish register and property-transaction data to study who lives in flood-prone areas and will estimate how flood risk is reflected in housing-market prices.
A further component involves designing a choice experiment to examine how households respond to risk signals from insurers, banks and public authorities. These findings will support the development of an agent-based model projecting flood exposure through 2075, linking household behaviour and spatial change to climate-adaptation decision-making.
The researcher will work across two complementary environments: Aarhus University’s Environmental Social Science and Geography section and the Danish Meteorological Institute’s National Center for Climate Research. The project offers access to unique Danish microdata and close supervision from Toke Panduro and Karsten Arnbjerg-Nielsen, alongside training in register-data analysis, choice experiments and agent-based modelling.
Funding details

What's required
Applicants should hold an M.Sc. in economics, spatial data analysis or a related quantitative field, with solid econometrics skills and proficiency in R, Python or Stata. Experience with difference-in-differences, hedonic pricing, choice modelling, register data or agent-based modelling is advantageous, but applicants are not expected to have experience in all areas. A strong quantitative foundation and interest in the research questions are sought.
