About this position
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a PhD position in Early Modern Religious Debates, focused on the use of AI and digital humanities methods to analyse historical sources. The project is part of the NWO-funded research initiative In Search of the Truth, in Search of Adherents, which investigates religious debates in the Dutch language from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The post is designed for a doctoral researcher interested in the intersection of religious history, textual analysis, and digital critical editions. You will study how participants in public debates drew on classical and ecclesiastical traditions, and how different confessional groups used these traditions to support arguments and distinguish themselves from opponents. The material offers a rich window into the development of public religious discourse in the Low Countries after the Reformation.
Alongside your own dissertation research, you will contribute to the preparation of a critical edition of early modern Dutch-language debates and help develop and refine methods and tools for creating digital critical editions. The project also includes close collaboration with a second PhD candidate working on rhetorical and argumentative strategies in the same debate culture, giving the two projects complementary perspectives on the intellectual traditions and broader cultural significance of these religious exchanges.
This is a strong fit for applicants with an interest in early modern history, religious studies, digital humanities, and AI-supported source analysis. The role includes academic article writing, public engagement, knowledge exchange, contributions to the research group and department, and participation in training provided by the Graduate School and NOSTER.
The application deadline is 2026-11-27. Applications must be submitted through AcademicTransfer.
