About this position
This PhD project at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on efficient online optimization for systems that cannot be fully modeled in advance and whose objectives and constraints change over time. The research addresses safety-critical, large-scale, and distributed settings such as drones in cluttered environments, buildings with autonomous climate control, and supply chains affected by changing markets and events.
The student will work on the theory and design of new methods that combine safe Bayesian optimization, online learning, and distributed estimation. The aim is to create algorithms with provable convergence and safety guarantees, especially for non-stationary settings where multiple agents cooperate without central coordination. The project is primarily theoretical, with a strong emphasis on rigorous analysis and new algorithmic frameworks.
The PhD candidate will be embedded in the Control Systems group at TU/e and contribute to its research program on intelligent and responsible control of networked systems. The project also includes experimental validation with partners in the drone lab at TU Eindhoven and at the NEST building in Dübendorf, Switzerland. Applications include UAV reference tracking and obstacle avoidance, as well as temperature control in a real residential building.
The work sits at the intersection of optimization, control, Gaussian processes, distributed systems, and machine learning, and the student will collaborate with academic partners including TU Delft and partners in Switzerland.
