About this position

The PhD programme in Geography at the University of Göttingen is built around the research focus “Resources and Sustainability”. It is centred on the interface of human-environment research and combines work in physical geography, human geography, cartography, GIS, and remote sensing.

Doctoral researchers engage with topics such as process mapping and modelling, material balances involving water, air, sediment, carbon, nitrogen, and pollutants, and the reconstruction of past environmental conditions. The programme also addresses the consequences of interventions in biogeochemical cycles, bringing together environmental analysis with broader sustainability questions.

On the social science side, the programme includes approaches from human ecology, political ecology, institutional analysis, and resource-use conflicts. The departments of Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Cartography, GIS and Remote Sensing are closely connected with the Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use, and there are further links with the Centre for Modern Indian Studies and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainable Development.

Doctoral students are integrated into international collaborative projects and centres, and are expected to develop autonomous scientific work while also taking part in the academic life of the Faculty and Institute of Geography.

Funding details

No tuition fees are stated; no stipend or scholarship funding is described in the advert.
