About this position

PhD position in Health Data Science at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, focused on AI for drug safety, pharmacovigilance, and real-world data. The project sits within the Department of Medical Informatics and the Health Data Science group, with international collaboration through OHDSI and large-scale observational data networks.

You will work on developing, implementing, benchmarking, and validating AI/ML workflows for reliable safety signal detection and validation across observational health data sources. Research themes include responsible AI, robustness, fairness, interpretability, causal inference, personalized risk assessment, and sex/gender-aware analysis, with attention to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, and older adults.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Aniek Markus and Prof. dr. ir. Peter Rijnbeek. The position is embedded in a multidisciplinary, open-science environment at Erasmus MC, an international academic hospital and research institution in the Netherlands.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as natural sciences, computer science, medical/health informatics, econometrics, or data science; strong programming skills in R/Python and SQL; excellent English; motivation for interdisciplinary research. Pharmacovigilance experience is not required but is considered an advantage.

Funding and terms: full-time appointment for 4 years with a gross monthly salary of €3217–€4220, plus benefits including a 13th month, travel package, pension contribution, and support from the International Office.
