About this position

PhD opportunity in Human-AI Interaction for Generative User Interfaces (GenUI) at Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Computer Science programme at the Graduate School of Natural Sciences.

The project is part of the NordForsk-funded RAID (Responsible AI in Interaction Design Practice) initiative and focuses on the emerging paradigm of Generative User Interfaces (GenUI)—interfaces that are partially or fully generated using AI to fit users’ needs, skills, circumstances, or preferences. The research is especially concerned with how such systems can preserve professional users’ control, ownership, and autonomy.

Possible research directions include malleable software, collaborative interfaces, AI for groupware and CSCW, and interface theory around AI as assistant, collaborator, tool, or medium. The project is embedded in a strong Human-Computer Interaction and Human-Centered AI environment in Aarhus.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a background in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field; a strong interest in human-AI interaction and human-centered AI; and strong software development skills. Prior research experience, HCI publications, thesis work, and experience building AI-integrated software are preferred.

Funding and mobility: the position is a funded PhD fellowship/scholarship. The project includes funding for visits to partner institutions (Bergen University, Tampere University, University of Gothenburg, and the IT University in Copenhagen) and support for a stay abroad of up to six months. Salary and employment terms follow the applicable collective agreement.

Application window: the online application system opens on 1 June 2026. The deadline is 1 August 2026 at 23:59 CEST. Applicants must use the August 2026 call, select the Computer Science programme, and choose Human-AI Interaction for Generative User Interfaces (GenUI) in the Study field. A project description must be uploaded as a PDF with the application.

Contacts: Clemens Nylandsted Klokmose (Associate Professor, Aarhus University; [email protected]) and Jens Emil Grønbæk (Assistant Professor, Aarhus University; [email protected]).
