About this position

Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is recruiting a PhD candidate for a doctoral grant in laser dynamics for fiber sensor interrogation, based at the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene), Belgium.

The project is part of LADYBIRD, funded by the Research Foundation of Flanders (FWO), and is hosted in the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group. The research focuses on photonics, optical fiber sensing, laser dynamics, and the detection of ultrasonic guided waves. The work includes building an experimental setup, exploring laser-dynamics-based interrogation strategies, benchmarking sensitivity and speed against established methods, and collaborating with another doctoral researcher on fiber sensor architecture.

The group has expertise in optical fiber sensing, semiconductor lasers, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos-based applications. This position is suitable for candidates interested in experimental optics, photonic systems, signal processing, and simulation-driven research with real-world sensing applications in structural health monitoring and related fields.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Applied Math, or a related scientific field. Strong interest in photonic systems and light technology is required. Experience with photonics, laser physics, nonlinear dynamics, programming (Matlab/Python), numerical methods, photonic simulation tools, and experimental optical setups is considered an advantage. Excellent English (C1 or equivalent) is required.

The position is a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months initially, extendable up to 48 months subject to positive annual evaluation. The grant follows government scales. The deadline to apply is 2026-08-15. Applications must be submitted through the VUB jobs portal with a CV, motivation letter, and diploma.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
